As we approached Zanzibar on the ferry, it felt like we were coming closer to a paradise movie set: white sandy beaches, clear blue water, palm trees. (However, we also felt the heat, something you don’t really appreciate when watching a movie.) We arrived in Stone Town, Zanzibar and were met by Daniel, our local guide on the island for the next three days.
After taking care of some paperwork, Daniel led us through a maze of alleys and buildings to our hotel. Another movie set, I thought, but this time for a James Bond chase scene: narrow alleys, blind corners, little boys playing with balls, women in black from head to toe, old men eating fried samosas in shop doorways.
We just had a few minutes in our hotel (with room AC!!!), before heading back to the beach for a boat ride, tour of Prison Island and the tortoises that live there, and snorkeling.

| The boat wasn't quite what I was expecting, but it held. |

The evening consisted of watching the sunset from the Africa House (unfortunately, the clouds prevented our seeing the sun actually setting) and then going to the fish market for dinner. The fish market was a block worth of venders selling fish kabobs, pizza, sugar cane juice, and all sorts of other deliciousness. You chose what type of food you wanted to try and a vendor would heat it up or prepare it for you on the spot. My type of place!

| Not your traditional pizza, but delicious! |
